Year 10 South Asian Women in STEM at University of Reading

In April 26 Year 10 girls of South Asian background were invited to a conference at the University of Reading. The morning began with the students being presented with three medical scenarios and possible interventions. They had to design a poster on which the scenario was discussed, each of the interventions were analysed, and present back to the group. Our girls were very thorough and showed excellent team working skills, and one of the groups won a prize!

Thereafter we embarked on a tour of campus with the girls asking some very pertinent questions about university life. The university provided a contrast to a city university where the different parts of the University are not nearby. A lot of our girls liked the idea that everything of need was within the campus such as a shop for groceries!!!

In the afternoon, we participated in small group discussions with Women from the industry and it was amazing to see the journey that these women had taken to reach their level of success. It assured the girls that success is not easy or linear, but if they have the confidence and flexibility to tailor their plans to the situation at the time, they would be certain of achieving their goals.
