Subject introduction:
The study of Art is a creative and exploratory journey. The Art Department aims to provide an exciting and stimulating learning experience. Projects are designed to stretch and challenge our learners, encouraging independent and creative development.
The schemes of work are constantly reviewed and improved to cater for all learning levels and skills.
Rewards and competitions
The Art Department runs several competitions, both internally and externally during the school year.
We reward outstanding work with achievement points, Art prizes and achievement certificates. Students are encouraged to engage fully with their creative abilities by making the Art Department available every break and lunchtime for our drop-in Art Club.
KS3 information
Year 7
Year 7 students attend one Art lesson per week.
Introduction to the elements of art and design. Students are introduced to the formal elements of art on design, exploring a range of media, techniques, and processes, including drawing, painting, and 3D construction. They study both historical and contemporary artists, including Yayoi Kusama and Henri Matisse.
Students develop their drawing skills into print making, collage and mixed media outcomes through small workshop tasks.
students are assessed throughout the project on the following criteria:
- Assessment Objective 1: develop ideas through investigations informed by contextual and other sources demonstrating analytical and cultural understanding;
- Assessment Objective 2: refine ideas through experimenting and selecting appropriate resources, media, materials, techniques, and processes;
- Assessment Objective 3: record ideas, observations, and insights relevant to their intentions, in visual and/or other forms;
Assessment Objective 4: present a personal, informed, and meaningful response, demonstrate analytical and critical understanding, realising intentions and where appropriate, making connections between visual, written, oral and other elements.
Project 1: Shape and Colour
Students learn: -
- the formal elements and will be able to identify the formal elements and apply colour and shape to their own work
- colour theory and abstract shapes. Students will explore this through painting and collage.
- about contemporary abstract painter, Odili Donald Oditia
- about Henri Matisse and his paper cut outs.
Project 2: Natural Forms: Pattern, Form and Tone
Students learn: -
- the formal elements and will be able to identify the formal elements and apply the formal elements
- about observational drawing and how to apply tone and texture to observational drawings
- how to develop their own designs using pattern and line
- the process of press printing and to apply line and pattern when press printing.
- about contemporary artist Yayoi Kusama
- about the Arts and Craft artist and designer William Morris
Project 3: Op-Art: Pattern, Shape, Form and Perspective
Students learn: -
- the formal elements and will be able to identify the formal elements and apply the formal elements
- about the Op-Art movement and art that has been inspired by Op-Art, including Bridget Riley
- about the use of shape, pattern and form in artworks, including painter and sculptor Charles McGee.
- how to use shapes and pattern to create illusions
- how to create their own artworks using paper construction techniques
ASSESSMENT AND CURRENT GRADE:
Year 7 students receive one homework per week which is marked using the assessment criteria above. Classwork & homework is also marked through ‘SIR’ (Strength, Improvement & Response) in accordance with Cressex School marking policy.
YEAR 8
Year 8 students attend one Art lesson per week.
Art Styles and Movements
Year 8 builds on the knowledge and skills learnt in year 7 and begins to develop skills in preparation for GCSE. Students will also learn more about practicing artists and careers. Students will develop their skills and knowledge associated with the formal elements of art on design, exploring a range of media, techniques, and processes, including drawing, painting, and 3D construction.
Students are assessed throughout the project on the following criteria:

Project 1: Cubism
Students Learn-
- About Cubist artists and the cubist movement, including Picasso as well as contemporary 3D artist Kimmy Cantrell
- How contemporary artists have been inspired by cubism
- How to abstract their work
- How to apply colour in response to cubist artists
- How to explore materials and techniques, including 3D relief to develop a personal outcome inspired by cubism
Project 2: Letters: Street Art and Graphics
Students Learn-
-About Street art and graphic art and how these artists can use their art to spread a positive message.
- How to design lettering
- How lettering is important
- What street art is why artists choose to work in this way
- About Street artist Ben Eine and the style he uses.
- About Street artist El Seed and the visual elements of his work: colour, shape etc.
- About Traditional uses of calligraphy, particularly Arabic calligraphy.
Project 3: Pop Art
Students Learn -
-About the Pop Art movement, its origins and purpose
- About Pop artists and contemporary art inspired by Pop Art. This includes Roy Lichtenstein and contemporary artist Romero Britto
- How artists work in the industry and collaborate with corporations
- How to develop observational drawing skills and work in the Pop Art style
- How to explore materials to create their own mixed media artwork inspired by Pop Art

KS4 information
AQA GCSE ART, CRAFT AND DESIGN COURSE
- Assessment Objective 1: develop ideas through investigations informed by contextual and other sources demonstrating analytical and cultural understanding;
- Assessment Objective 2: refine ideas through experimenting and selecting appropriate resources, media, materials, techniques and processes;
- Assessment Objective 3: record ideas, observations and insights relevant to their intentions, in visual and/or other forms;
- Assessment Objective 4: present a personal, informed and meaningful response, demonstrate analytical and critical understanding, realising intentions and where appropriate, making connections between visual, written, oral and other elements.
YEAR 9 KS4 -
Year 9 students have three art lessons a week.
Year 9 students are offered additional booster sessions
Students work through experimental and developmental workshops, exploring the theme of natural forms. They experiment with various materials, media, techniques and processes alongside Artist research and critical analysis. Students build up their skills in drawing, painting, collage, printmaking,3D relief work, ceramics, drawing, photography.
Students will also have the opportunity to visit the Royal Academy of Art.
Component 1: Portfolio (60% of final GCSE mark)
Project 1: ‘Natural forms’- mixed media response- 2D/3D
ASSESSMENT AND CURRENT GRADE:

YEAR 10 KS4 -
Year 10 students have two art lessons a week.
Year 10 students are offered additional booster sessions
Students work through experimental and developmental workshops, building up their skills from the Year 9 project. They experiment with various materials, media, techniques and processes alongside artist research and critical analysis.
Students also have the opportunity to visit the Royal Academy of Art.
Component 1: Portfolio (60% of final GCSE mark)
Project 2: ‘Human Anatomy’ -mixed media response
This will develop into a personal project along the broader themes of:
Human Figure
Human Nature
Animal Anatomy
Age and Decay
This allows students more ownership and independence and will help prepare for the set task unit and develop the coursework unit.
ASSESSMENT AND CURRENT GRADE:
- Year 10 students receive one homework per week which is marked using the assessment criteria above. Classwork & homework is also marked through ‘SIR’ (Strength, Improvement & Response) in accordance with Cressex School marking policy.
YEAR 11 KS4 -
Year 11 students have three art lessons a week.
Year 11 students are expected to attend additional booster sessions
Component 1: Portfolio (60% of final GCSE mark)-
Continuation of Personal project and preparation for an outcome completed under mock exam conditions
Component 2: External Exam (40% of final GCSE mark)-
Students receive the GCSE Art, Craft and Design exam paper in January of Year 11. They choose one starting point theme, out of seven choices from the exam paper. They explore and develop the theme, individually and independently, through to a final idea. Students work through Assessment Objectives 1,2 and 3, with Assessment Objective 4 being their final personal response to the exam. This exam preparation work (lessons/homework and booster sessions) runs from January until April. The 10-hour exam runs over two school days and is held in April.
ASSESSMENT AND CURRENT GRADE:
- Year 11 students receive one homework per week which is marked using the assessment criteria, above, and is also SIR marked in accordance with Cressex School marking policy.
- Students' work is marked three times per half term, using the assessment criteria above and is also SIR marked in accordance with the Cressex School marking policy.
