Year 10 Geographers Conduct Vital GCSE Fieldwork at Hengistbury Head

In September, our Year 10 geographers travelled to Hengistbury Head to carry out coastal fieldwork as part of their preparation for the GCSE Geography Paper 3 exam. Fortunately, the weather was on our side, and the group enjoyed a warm, sunny day while collecting valuable real-world data.

During the visit, students investigated the characteristics of the beach by completing beach profiles and analysing sediment size and shape at different points along the coastline.

These methods help geographers understand how waves and coastal processes shape the landscape over time. The data collected will now be used back in the classroom to practise

The skills needed for the Paper 3 exam, particularly describing methods, presenting data, and evaluating how successful their fieldwork investigations were.

Fieldwork like this is a key part of studying geography because it allows students to apply what they learn in lessons to a real environment. The students worked brilliantly in their groups, carefully using their equipment and recording their findings like professional geographers.

As a bonus, one particularly lucky group managed to catch the famous Hengistbury Head “mini-train” back to the car park, saving their legs from the long walk at the end of the day!

Overall, it was an excellent trip that gave students a hands-on experience of coastal geography and provided them with valuable data that will support their exam preparation later in the year.
